Hopinions 21 “On Trend”

This week we’re looking back at some great beers we’ve had recently and chatting about what it means for a beer to be “on trend”.

Beer | Six Degrees North/Magic Rock ‘Magic Six’, Chorlton/Vocation ‘Sour & Death’ & Lervig/Hoppin Frog ‘Sippin Into Darkness’

Hopinions | Should beers in a brewery’s core range change to stay on trend?

Blogs | Pub Curmudgeon’s ‘Love of a lifetime‘ & Matt Chinnery’s review of Stokey Beer Fest

Prizeless Prize | The big box of nothing returns to the North this week as Cowboy Drinks Craft takes the honours

We’re grateful to Matt at Six Degrees North for sending us ‘Magic Six’ . The fact that we were given this beer for free did not influence our thoughts on it.

Hopinions 16 “Festival Overload?”

As the aftershocks of #CaskGate continue to rumble on, this week we turn our attentions to the growing number of craft beer festivals in the UK.

Beer | Hawkshead/Cigar City ‘Tiramisu Imperial Stout’ & Siren/Cigar City ‘Barrel Aged Caribbean Chocolate Cake’

Hopinions | Is the UK reaching craft beer festival saturation point?

Blogs | Pete Brown, KM Flett, Connor Murphy & The Malting Floor

Prizeless Prize | Cask ale features heavily in this big box of nothing winning effort from Million Bevs

Letters | Our new listener-only letters (by which we mean tweets) section features contributions from @CraftBeerGeekUK, @SilanderGraham & @Katrinnas

Hopinions 09 “Goose Island” (Part II)

file_001In the second part of our Goose Island special, we continue to chat with Josh & Jonny about some of their special releases.

Beer | Halia & Bourbon County Brand Stout (2015)

Hopinions | Does big beer ownership impact on your buying decisions & Is selling up the same as selling out?

Blog | The Moral High Ground: Shades of grey by Justin Mason, Opinions on Hopinions by Ruth Mitchell, Chasing The Goose by Matt Chinnery, So Here We Are by Rachel Smith and Back to the Future by Peter McKerry

Many thanks to Thom for making these shows happen. We worked with Goose Island to produce these podcasts and the beers that we had were given to us for free. We don’t believe that this has influenced our thoughts on the beers or questions for Goose Island.

Episode 131 – Two Hundred Fathoms

IMG_5279This week we welcome Mr & Mrs Beer Snob, Wayne & Janice Dunne back to the Beer O’clock studios to review Galway Bay’s barrel aged imperial stout ‘Two Hundred Fathoms’.

We catch up on all the news, give away another first time #prizelessprize and there’s a bonus interview with Caroline Hennessy, author of the Irish craft beer and food book, Sláinte.

If that wasn’t enough, Mark also gets a bit ranty in #hoptopic.

It’s Beer O’Clock!

‘Sláinte’ can be purchased for worldwide delivery here and Caroline’s website can be found here

Episode 129 – Yellow Belly

image1 (3)This week we welcome Buxton Brewery head brewer Colin Stronge to the show talk to us about all things Buxton including the Yellow Belly imperial stout with us.

Episode 127 – Homebrew Special #6 (The Imperial March)

IMG_1417.JPG

It’s time for our seasonal trip down homebrew lane as we invite 3 homebrewers from the first 3 homebrew specials

back for a slight variation on a theme. This time round, we told the guys what we wanted and laid down the groundrules… the beers had to be black, had to be impy and had to taste of oranges! So Andy Parker (homebrew special #1), Andrew Hobbs (homebrew special #2) and Ady Goodrich (homebrew special #3) return to share their big impy black orange beers with us.

We also chat about what the impending ‘hop crisis’ will mean for homebrewers and we award a suitably themed big box of nothing in the #prizelessprize

All this plus some exclusive news from Magic Rock Brewing.

Episode 78 – Good King Henry Special Reserve 2011

It’s the end of Season 4, and with great sorrow… we open what can only be described as a very special beer indeed. This week we tuck into Old Chimneys ‘Good King Henry Special Reserve 2011’, the highest rated beer on RateBeer.com and one that makes many a beer geek sweat.

In the news is Britain Beer Day, Thornbridge’s Summer Tour and Brewdog’s latest bar (of course!). There’s also the final Instagram #PrizelessPrize of the season and an immense season-end roundup with clips from our trip to the Great British Beer Festival!

Episode 67 – Homebrew Special #2

It’s time for another Homebrew Special – and this time we have a trio of amazing beers from Daz Oakley, Connor Murphy and Andrew Hobbs: an american pale ale, a black IPA and a chocolate orange imperial stout (yes, you read that right!).

We discuss all manner of homebrewy things with the lads, and hopefully collect some tips for all of you thinking of putting a bucket in your shed or spare wardrobe in case you’re thinking of entering the Thornbridge / Waitrose Great British Homebrew Challenge 2014 www.gbhomebrew.co.uk

We also look back at the 25 Taps of Magic, look forward to the Bermondsey Beer Mile and Summer Brew Fest plus there’s also a bonus interview with the guys from Brewdog’s latest venture, Bottledog Kings X.
