Episode 93 – Mystery Beer Live Episode

To cap off Season 5 the Beer O’Clock Show went live to the YouTubes to record the grand unveiling of the end-of-season Mystery Beer that only Steve knew about.

Listen to the polished version show via the usual means, or watch our little faces from the YouTube recording below as we break open and enjoy Magic Rock’s Bourbon Barrel Bearded Lady Imperial Brown Stout.

There’s a preview of the forthcoming Lock In with Sharona from Left Hand Brewing telling us all about the beers we’ll be drinking. Plus the final #PrizelessPrize was the closest one we’ve had all season. Check out the winning entry here and the runners up here.

We recount the season past, and all the beers and company we enjoyed, and Mark gets a bit emotional.

The UK Top 10 Ales

We have our first brewery to win 2 polls, running away with the votes on this one…

1. Marble Pint 3.9% ABV (bitter)
Former guest on the show and Manchester-based blogger Rowan Molyneux has this to say about the winning beer… Marble has been one of my favourite breweries since I started drinking beer, and when I moved to Manchester I was delighted to be able to drink in Marble’s own pubs. Zingy, pale and fresh, Pint is a stalwart of the Marble range. Full-bodied despite its low ABV, the grapefruit and lemon flavours sing from the glass and its clean, refreshing nature leads you towards ordering another, and another…. To drink this by anything less than, well, the pint, would be an injustice! For me, Pint is the perfect session beer.

UK Top 10 Porters/Stouts (7.5% & higher)

Once again, only 4 votes seperated the top 2 beers in this poll…

1. Magic Rock Bourbon Barrel Bearded Lady 10.5% ABV

Normally we’d get a guest blogger to write the piece about the winner but I couldn’t think of a bigger Magic Rock fanboy than me! So here’s what I thought when I sampled the 2013 version last Christmas… After I got through the wax seal and cracked the top I was instantly greeted with sweet piney, roasted aromas. The pour is thick, black (even though it’s a brown stout) and leaves a lovely creamy brown head. There is a big boozy aroma from the glass and you get coffee laced with cream while at the same time almost getting a whiff of JD and coke. The taste is like nothing I have ever sampled before. It’s like a smooth espresso and the bourbon ageing is coming through in every gulp. But it’s not harsh, it’s smooth, it’s warming and it just makes you keep going in for more. Big piney aromas continue throughout the drink, there is a thick flavour and finish, but I just can’t get over how smooth it is. As I near the end of the glass the smoothness continues, but the roasted flavours begin to give way and there’s slight fruit tones in there. This is so well balanced and so well delivered.

UK Top Ten IPAs

IPA

The list came about due to the inspiration found in Andy Parker’s recent blog ‘Rule Britannia’ where Andy talks about “coveting beers from the US”. The task itself, was simple wasn’t it? Take to the Twittersphere to gain opinion as to a favoured ten or so beers and put them into the list. Only it wasn’t that simple. WIthin a couple of hours the list has reached 50-odd suggestions and things were running away with me, so I once again took to the Twittersphere to ask for advice and was offered the following suggestions…

Golden Pints 2013

Golden Pints LogoThis is my first time with the Golden Pints – I thought it would be quite easy but when you start thinking, and I mean REALLY thinking about each of the categories, it becomes quite tough and a real challenge. So after much thought and deliberation  and more than one or two checks of Untappd, here are my entries for the Golden Pints 2013…
